Connected-Disconnected

Mixed-media XR storytelling experience (2024)
"Connected-Disconnected" is an interactive experience utilizing different media where user choices shape multiple endings, exploring three human facets.


Connected-Disconnected is a mixed reality multiplayer experience, enabling participants to shape narratives through their interactions within a shared protagonist’s consciousness. It explores how mixed media – Text, 3D, VR – through their unique features, invoke feelings of being connected or disconnected based on the choices they make, and of controlling or being controlled. To give one player the power to control others, the medium uses an appropriate interface and content to convey this sense of power. Meanwhile, the other player will experience the feeling of being controlled by another in the VR world.This experience emphasizes the role of communication in virtual spaces, where each participant's actions directly impact the others' emotional and perceptual realities.




Background of the idea of "Connected-Disconnected"

I put this idea in three places with different characters. A dark pond, symbolizes the deep inner mind. The forest for the outer world. A bustling café, mirrors the social sphere.



Experience Design / Interaction


> Building interactive storytelling with Twine
I could start to set the interactive storytelling structure using Twine based on the story I wrote. To brief the story, the three protagonists mysteriously notice each other's connection points in different spaces. They meet each other for a long journey begins. I applied this setting to a Twine game. It feels right for me to match the theme "connected-disconnected”

In Twine, I planned that with more adventurous choices, the player could come closer to reaching a different space. So, if they follow more weird phenomena such as staying longer to observe strange shadows while they are running in the woods, touching the mysterious flower petal, and following sounds that seem to come from another world, you will get to the pond.

You might connect them through the shortcut or you might choose a longer way by circling the same patterns. You might go off the track to end the game or you could get stuck with no connection to others.


> Bringing it in to immersive space
I wanted to pull this text-based media out as an immersive space. People is going to play with three protagonists in the three places, how do I make them feel connected or disconnected.

> Multiplayer
In terms of interactive experience design, the multiplayer form seemed the most fit. One player can influence other players depending on what choices they make, and the other players can notice it... this kind of interaction was much more attractive to me. I was able to come up with the structure below. There will be screens projected the VR view for the audience member, so they can watch and hear what VR player is experiencing, but it’s not the same as the VR view, they will see only some part of that. I think this experience symbolize “connected-disconnected”, combining active, passive, and cognitive interaction.



> User testing and the Showcase


    Insights and Future opportunities
    • Twine was initially considered as a prototype for VR. But Through user testing, I found that including Twine, as part of the project seemed to help increase the immersive state.
    • I found that it is interesting that different experiences and behaviors depending on the input device. This can influence the form of storytelling.
    • I can see the possibility of “A multiplayer experience in mixed media, controlling the virtual world via Twine.”
