Disease of Doubt

Charlotte Shi, Dipika Titus, Hyungin Choi, Mashiyat Zaman
“Disease of Doubt” is designed to share and educate the four stages of the OCD cycle—obsession, anxiety, compulsion, and temporary relief—with the audience through VR and the physical stage. To induce the audience's action, we designed elements of affordance and feedback, using voice and visual tension to lead the emotional curve. The world inside the VR and the physical stage outside the VR respectively represent the recurring state experienced within OCD and the state of relief from it, adding another layer to the experience.

The audience becomes involved in the states of obsession, anxiety, and compulsion within the VR, and by shedding the VR (state of obsession) off, they face the real world (physical stage) and reach a state of temporary relief. While performing a letter-writing mission, the audience is interrupted by voices containing intrusive thoughts. The more they are disturbed by these voices and deviate from their letter-writing task, the more chaotic the voice and visual effects become until they peak, with faster, harsher voices and urgently flickering lights, causing anxiety. As the degree of disturbance intensifies, the audience can escape the situation by removing the VR goggles. Once they remove the goggles, they are greeted with a garden of light representing healing, symbolizing the temporary relief stage, on the other side of the stage. As the final stage of the experience, printed materials about OCD are displayed to educate the audience, who have passed through the garden, about what they experienced through the VR with the physical stage in the form of textual knowledge.
