– “The Altar for Heavenly Rituals”
Interactive Educational Media | Multimedia | Holographic Visualization | Museum Exhibition Content
Seonnongdan is a sacred site where Joseon Dynasty kings conducted agricultural rituals to pray for national prosperity. At the center of these rituals stood a spiritual tree, positioned in front of the altar known as Seonnongdan, symbolizing harmony between the heavens and earth.
"The Altar for Heavenly Rituals," this project aimed to educate visitors about the origins, evolution, and ceremonial practices of Seonnongdan through an interactive media experience that combines touch-display and holographic elements to deliver immersive and intuitive storytelling.

VISUAL CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT & UI DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS
To establish a unified direction for the design, I chose the tree as the central motif. This motif symbolizes the heart of the ritual and serves as the foundation for all design elements.

“A closer look into the ceremony“ “Offering the Grand Seonnong Rite, “
- Look into the Royal Seonnong Ritual : A closer look into the ceremony, its flow and meaning.
- Offering the Grand Seonnong Rite : A symbolic recreation of the king’s ceremonial offering.
- Music, Song, and Dance of the Ritual : Explore the traditional music, vocal performance, and ritual dance.
Design Elements
- Menu Taps: Designed using tree ring patterns, representing the growth rings of the tree.
- Background Design: Incorporating Korean brush strokes to reflect the traditional nature of the ritual. Additionally, gold was used to symbolize the royal ceremony.
- Texture: The use of Hanji (Korean paper) texture to evoke the cultural and aesthetic mood of the era.
- Other Assets: Incorporated traditional Korean elements into the decorations and all other design components.
EXPERIENCE DESIGN APPROACH
Technical ImplementationThe experience integrated two synchronized media platforms: a horizontal touch-display table and a vertically mounted holographic screen. Together, they created a multi-sensory environment where user interaction triggered visuals and audio across both displays, extending the storytelling beyond a single surface.
Dual Output Channels
- Interactive Media Table: Representing the ritual altar, it symbolizes the sacred ground where the ceremony took place.
- Holographic Screen: Displays a lifelike 3D model of the spiritual tree, enhancing realism and physical presence in the space.
Interaction DesignAs users engage with the media table, related visuals and contextual information appear on the holographic screen, corresponding to the content being explored.
When navigating to the educational section on the music and dance performed during the Seonnongje (a royal ritual for a good harvest), users are presented with a short motion clip accompanied by traditional music, creating a richer, multisensory learning experience.

Experience Design
The interface combined visual, auditory, and spatial storytelling to evoke a sense of presence and emotional connection. Visitors could navigate the content through direct interaction, allowing them to follow the rituals step by step. This intuitive and immersive design allowed even unfamiliar audiences to engage deeply, creating a moment of reflection and cultural connection that bridges past and present.

IMPACT & OUTCOME
The exhibition received nationwide media coverage, with The Altar for Heavenly Rituals spotlighted as a key innovation. The project stood out as a successful example of how technology can revitalize cultural storytelling and bring renewed public interest to Korea’s heritage by introducing the rarely known ritual to a broader audience. Through engaging digital experiences, it bridged historical distance, making the tradition approachable and meaningful for modern viewers.
