SNOW FALL
Creative Data Visualization | Practical Mini Project
Hyung-in Choi, Herui Chen

This project focused on visualizing snowfall data from the Colorado region, overcoming challenges in data collection and design implementation. We started by exploring 12 months of data to create initial visual samples, then expanded to 6 years of data to refine snow-crystal-shaped visuals through iterative design and coding. Despite some unresolved technical issues with rotation effects, we successfully produced compelling graphics combining data-driven visuals and graphic tools. This project highlights the iterative process of data exploration, design, and development in creating engaging visual narratives.

GET DATA
Collecting data was one of the challenging parts. It was difficult to access some datasets, to obtain historical datasets from multiple regions, we needed to invest more time. We decided to focus on visualizing the datasets of the Colorado region. We were able to get 178 data from it.

DESIGN PROCESS  -  Iteration & Development

Ideation & Brainstorming

1st Data Exploration → Design → Code/Build

Based on the sketch design we did, we started with 12-month data(Array(12)) to step the first process of Explore data → Design → Code/Make and we got first visual sample.

2nd Data Exploration → Design → Code/Build

We repeated this process(Explore data → Design → Code/Make) to elaborate the design by using 6 years of snowfall data(72 data) to obtain the snow-crystal-shaped visuals we wanted. We explored several styles in the design to obtain better-looking crystal-shaped visuals.

ISSUE

There is an issue that we have not solved while working on this project. We tried to use the flowers’ code below, but we did not find a way to rotate the crystal shape unit and stopped without getting the desired result. The visuals of the top in this document is made using a graphic tools.
